Natalie’s mom (Jennifer Saunders) tells Natalie after she finds her watching Pretty Woman, that girls who watch romantic comedies will only ever find someone to marry them if a man needs a visa.

Natalie thereby carries this skepticism of romance and lack of self-confidence into her adulthood. She grows up to become an architect in New York. However, she has to struggle to prove herself worth it to her male colleagues who view her as a coffee goffers rather than a qualified professional who can design a New York skyscraper.

A new client Blake mistakes her coffee for his, and she is forced to get him coffee. After she finds her friend Whitney watching The Wedding Singer while crying, she goes on a rant complaining that romantic comedies set a bad example and are hogwash.

Whitney counters by telling Rebel that more people would notice her if she became more open. Natalie later wakes up to her worst nightmare after violently hitting her head after an attempted mugging in the New York subway. She wakes up to realize that she is playing the lead lady in a real-life romantic comedy.

Upon being discharged from the hospital, she meets Blake who offers to take her home. He gives her his number. On reaching her apartment, she realizes that it’s larger and nicer and that she owns many shoes and a well-groomed dog. Her wildly neighbor, Donny is now her flamboyant stereotypical gay best friend. Natalie realizes that she must make Blake fall in love with her to end the nightmare, but she soon realizes that she might be falling for Josh, her friend from work. She breaks up with Blake and decides to prevent the marriage between Josh and Isabella by telling him her feelings but later realizes that the nightmare was meant to show her that she loves herself.

The film makes fun of all the romantic comedy clichés with a cheeky spirit. It is both satirical and entertaining.
